What is Post Concussion Syndrome?

1. How Big is the Problem?

c.  Fifty times more concussions occur outside of organized sports than within organized sports. Most of these concussions are undiagnosed and untreated. 

 

2. The Causes of Concussion

Helmets help, but you can still receive a concussion if the brain is shaken.

Vehicular accidents, slips, falls, proximity to an explosion, whiplash, falling out of bed – there is an endless number of ways in which a concussion can come about.

 

3. What are the Lingering Effects of a Shaken Brain?

  • Confusion
  • Anxiety
  • Loss of motivation
  • Substance abuse
  • Depression
  • Suicidal Ideation

This is the typical sequence of symptoms. Collectively they are referred to as a downward spiral, where each symptom can lead to the next.

4. Why is it a Hidden Epidemic?

  • Only a small percentage of concussions are reported and/or diagnosed.
  • The symptoms of PCS mask other conditions, typical teen behavior, moodiness, etc.
  • Organizations whose activities can lead to concussion don’t want to publicly discuss the issue for fear that it will decrease participation or increase litigation.
